Daily Word Search History
Norman E. Gibat designed and published the word search puzzle (also known as WordSeek, WordFind, WonderWord, and others) in the Selenby Digest on March 1, 1968, in Norman, Oklahoma, despite the fact that the Spanish puzzle creator Pedro Ocón de Oro was publishing “Sopas de Letras” (Spanish “Soup of Letters”) before that date. Selenby was a free want-ad digest available at Safeway and other local businesses. 8.5 by 5.5 inches was the original paper size.
The puzzle was a hit in the community, and numerous others were created after it. Reprints were requested by several Norman instructors for use in their courses. One instructor sent them to other pals at other schools around the country. Eventually, one of these strewn copies led to someone selling the idea to a syndicator.
With Facebook games like Letters of Gold, word search puzzles have become quite popular on the internet. A Way with Words, Boggle, Bookworm, Letterpress, Outworded, Puzzlage, Ruzzle, Wonderword, Wordament, WordSpot, Word Streak with Friends, and Word Winder are some of the other digital and tabletop word search games.
